"From rising suicide levels to surveys showing how Gen Z is the loneliest generation ever, we look at the reasons behind this global sentiment. We ask: Is the digital world helping or hurting our ability to truly connect? What happened to communities that support their members?"
Digital connectivity has increased while meaningful interpersonal connection has declined, creating a paradox of connected isolation. Suicide rates and survey data point to deepening loneliness, particularly among younger generations such as Gen Z. Contributing factors include curated social media, algorithmic amplification, reduced face-to-face interaction, economic pressures, and fragmented community networks. Questions arise about whether digital platforms enhance or undermine genuine connection and how communal structures that once supported members have weakened. Responses include rebuilding local networks, improving platform design and responsibility, expanding mental health resources, and teaching healthier online and offline social practices.
