I'm a professor of biology at Dublin's RCSI. Here's what it felt like when I had a major depressive episode, and how I was diagnosed
Briefly

"I had my first major depressive episode last year, when I was in my mid-40s. This was the first time I had personally experienced any type of mental illness. Up until then I would have described my life as being great. Everything - in terms of family, friends, career - was going well... until it wasn't."
"In truth, I was ambushed. It started the year before, with anxiety. I thought it was due to perimenopausal symptoms, so I spoke to my GP and started on hormone replacement therapy (HRT)."
