Intolerance for uncertainty, or IU, is associated with different forms of anxiety, depression, and substance use disorder. Higher intolerance for uncertainty doesn't directly cause these conditions but is a common trait across them.
IU varies among individuals, with some mildly affected by uncertainty while others experience extreme distress. It was defined by researchers in the 1990s to understand generalized anxiety disorder, excessive worry, and the Intolerance for Uncertainty Scale.
