""continuous need to produce creatively," which was "a very draining and very scary thing.""
Matthew Mercer stepped back from serving as Game Master for Critical Role's Campaign Four after ten years in that role. Mercer had led the group's creative efforts while also managing livestream episodes that often ran four hours. He experienced burnout characterized by a continuous, draining need to produce creatively and acknowledged the need to step away to replenish. Brennan Lee Mulligan assumed the Game Master role for Campaign Four. Critical Role continues to operate multiple projects, including a sold-out arena tour, two animated series on Prime Video, and Darrington Press's flagship tabletop game Daggerheart.
