Theresa Fortune, an artist in Oakland, recently unveiled her first major artwork after overcoming a decade-long struggle with postpartum depression. Over ten years ago, she faced severe depression and contemplated suicide due to her circumstances. To cope, she began documenting her experiences through art, which led to significant recognition, including her artwork being displayed at Kaiser Permanente. Her latest piece symbolizes life, love, and resilience, marking a profound shift from her earlier struggles, and she now hopes to inspire others through her story and artistry.
"This piece is everything about life, love and joy and opportunity and color," Fortune said, reflecting the essence of her artistic journey and personal struggles.
"I had actually thought about taking my life at one point because I was just in this pit hole that I wasn't able to climb out of," Fortune recounts her past struggles.
"I thought of opening up my wrists, and I realized that that would be really messy for my child to come home to," she emphasizes the depth of her despair.
"It was very inspirational to me, and it's a story we should continue to tell," said Dante Green reflecting on Fortune's impactful art.
