The annual NHS Staff Survey reveals troubling statistics for Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust, with 45.5% of respondents feeling work-related stress severe enough to affect their health. Harassment from patients and the public has risen, affecting nearly a third of staff, while 16% reported encountering physical violence. Although bullying and harassment from colleagues and managers have slightly decreased since 2020, overall feelings of safety and adequacy in staff levels remain low, underscoring persistent issues in the working environment. BHRUT’s leadership acknowledges these challenges and commits to improvement initiatives.

29% of respondents reported experiencing harassment from patients, relatives, or the public, increasing over the last year and exceeding the NHS average by 5%.
Only 34% of BHRUT staff felt there was adequate staffing to perform their roles effectively, raising concerns about staff wellbeing and service delivery.
BHRUT chief executive Matthew Trainer stated that the rising violence and discrimination against staff is unacceptable and emphasized ongoing support initiatives.
