Soda additive "no longer considered safe," gets long-awaited FDA ban

After more than five decades, the FDA banned BVO, a toxic additive used in foods since the 1920s. Safety concerns arose as studies found harmful effects like thyroid abnormalities and fatty acid accumulation.

The FDA proposed the ban in 2023 following its own studies showing health risks associated with BVO exposure, despite using an interim safety limit since the 1970s.
