Ontario midwives can now administer routine vaccines, prescribe more drugs | CBC News
Briefly

Midwives in Ontario are now allowed to prescribe more medications for managing nausea, miscarriages, and postpartum birth control. They can also administer routine vaccinations including flu shots, COVID-19 vaccines, and the Tdap shot.
The expanded scope for midwives is designed to reduce the need for additional medical appointments, connect more people to convenient care, and decrease referrals to other healthcare professionals.
The Ministry of Health is collaborating with the College of Midwives of Ontario and the Association of Ontario Midwives to explore further optimization of midwives' scope of practice beyond the recent changes.
While welcoming the news of expanded capabilities, the College and Association have expressed that allowing midwives to order and prescribe the full range of pregnancy care tests and medications would be more beneficial given the rapidly evolving nature of medical practices.
