The new health center will offer care to 400 pregnant individuals and 15,000 outpatient visitors annually, focusing on decreasing adverse health outcomes in central Brooklyn, an area with high rates of maternal and infant mortality.
Central Brooklyn faces a maternal health crisis, with the Black immigrants in the region experiencing the highest rates of severe maternal morbidity, highlighting significant Black-white maternal mortality disparities in NYC.
SUNY Downstate President is thankful for the funding as the Birthing Center will provide vital care for vulnerable populations in an area with high maternal mortality, infant mortality, and inadequate prenatal care.
