"Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, is a genetic disease in which the heart muscle grows thicker than normal. Doctors typically divide the condition into two forms: obstructive (oHCM) and non-obstructive (nHCM). The obstructive form represents about two-thirds of the entire HCM population and occurs when the mitral valve moves abnormally, causing obstruction of blood flow between the heart and the aorta."
"With HCM, there's too much of a good thing; that extra thickness leads to the problems associated with this disease. The heart is inefficient, doesn't squeeze out enough blood, and obstruction in the heart cavity leads to murmurs that can worsen with exercise, create breathlessness, and generate electrical changes inside the heart."
