Broomfield Hospital has restricted visitor access to protect patients amid a surge in flu cases, allowing visits only for end-of-life care.
Chief Executive Nick Hulme reported that flu infections surged unexpectedly, saying, 'It was extraordinary to see the level of patients on both sites.'
A statement from Bedford Hospital outlined that they were experiencing an 'exceptional level of demand' on services similar to other hospitals in the region.
Prof Sir Stephen Powis affirmed the NHS's commitment stating, 'Despite record A&E demand... we are working incredibly hard to keep them safe.'
