The FDA has approved clinical trials for organ transplants from genetically modified pigs, a significant step towards resolving the organ shortage crisis. United Therapeutics will start with six patients while eGenesis will begin with three, potentially expanding the trials. Previous transplants were performed outside of formal trials, mainly for critically ill patients, leading to one survivor, Towana Looney. The urgency of these trials is underscored by over 550,000 Americans suffering from kidney failure, with many waiting on a limited number of organ donations. These trials could revolutionize organ transplantation and save lives.
We are entering a transformative era in organ transplantation," said Mike Curtis, the president and chief executive of eGenesis, referring to the new genetic advances.
The longest survivor to date is Towana Looney, a 53-year-old woman from Alabama who received a pig's kidney at NYU Langone Health in New York City.
