The medical community was firmly against the usage of DNP as a weight loss supplement, noting severe health risks such as skin lesions and other serious complications.
Studies from 1933 to 1937 reported that up to 23 percent of DNP users suffered from skin lesions, along with issues like ear problems, low white blood cell counts, and jaundice.
Despite the 1938 ban on DNP due to its dangers, it has persisted as an illegal supplement, contributing to many deaths in recent years.
Between 1934 and 1936, nine deaths were reported from DNP, including three from overdosing, all showing immediate signs of rigor mortis.
