In M3gan 2.0, Allison Williams returns as Gemma, a roboticist grappling with the consequences of her AI creation gone wrong. The film delves into the dangers of unchecked technology and the uncanny nature of AI, embodied by the titular doll. Williams highlights the intense experience of acting alongside the mechanical performer, discussing the challenges and eerie qualities of interacting with a lifelike object. She also brings a personal interest in AI into her role, shaped by connections in the tech world, enhancing the film's exploration of modern societal issues surrounding artificial intelligence.
Acting opposite M3gan was unsettling, says Williams, speaking over a video call from a hotel room in New York. Sometimes she was played by the 15-year-old dancer Amie Donald, but often she was a robotic doll, animated by a small team.
Williams has long been interested in AI she knows Sam Altman, the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, who put her in touch with robotics experts when she was researching the role of Gemma.
The film raises questions not only about the dangers of AI but also offers commentary on cultural phenomena while continuing to explore the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
Sometimes she would stand in the corner of the soundstage, says Allison Williams with a nervy laugh. The dilemma is: do you turn her around so she's facing the wall, or do you let her face the room?
