Jeff Bezos purchased The Washington Post in 2013 and invested in its journalism and business innovation, leading the paper to initially flourish. Recently the Post has incurred annual losses in the tens of millions of dollars. Scores of reporters are writing letters and social posts appealing to Bezos not to eliminate jobs, especially global coverage. Former Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr. expressed disappointment over the lack of announcement, rationale, or vision. The newsroom has just under 800 journalists, and union members report possible losses of 100 to 300 people. Staff report damaged trust due to silence from Bezos and CEO Will Lewis and say they have been warned about assignments and encouraged to job hunt.
