Republican rebukes FCC chair's threats to revoke broadcast licenses over Iran war
"Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions also known as the fake news have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up. The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not."
"I'm in big support of the first amendment. I do not like the heavy hand of government, no matter who's wielding it. So no, I would rather the federal government stay out of the private sector as much as possible. The federal government's role is to protect our freedoms, protect our constitutional rights."
"It's illegal for the government to censor free speech it just doesn't like about Trump's Iran war. This threat is straight out of the authoritarian playbook."
FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned that broadcasters could lose their licenses if they spread what the agency considers fake news regarding the Iran conflict. Carr stated that broadcasters running hoaxes and news distortions must correct course before license renewals or face revocation. Senator Ron Johnson criticized the threat as government overreach, emphasizing support for the First Amendment and limited federal involvement in private enterprise. Democrats also opposed Carr's position, with Senator Elizabeth Warren calling it illegal censorship and authoritarian, while Senator Chris Murphy warned of totalitarianism. Governor Gavin Newsom deemed the threat flagrantly unconstitutional. Carr subsequently doubled down on his position during a CBS News interview.
