At least 30 U.S. and international news organizations declined to sign new Pentagon media-access rules that could result in revoking Pentagon press badges. The rules require journalists to acknowledge they could be deemed security risks and face badge revocation for asking department employees to disclose classified and certain unclassified information. The Department of Defense has already limited media access, moved some outlets out of Pentagon offices, and reduced press briefings. The Pentagon characterized the requirement as an acknowledgment of policy and argued it protects national security, while press groups said the rules gag employees and restrict reporting.
