"Google AI Overviews have been a disaster for publishers who rely on clicks to fund the production of quality journalism, but they also let down users looking for accurate information."
"The wrong answers included several basic fumbles, such as misstating the year in which musician Bob Marley's home was converted into a museum."
"Algorithmically-generated responses that pull in data from nearly every source on the internet simply cannot be trusted."
Google's AI-generated search results are producing tens of millions of inaccuracies each hour, according to an analysis by startup Oumi. The analysis reviewed 4,326 results from Google's Gemini 2 and 3 models, finding accuracy rates of 85% and 91%, respectively. With projections of over 5 trillion searches in 2026, this translates to hundreds of thousands of mistakes per minute. The inaccuracies have harmed news publishers and misled users seeking reliable information, as AI Overviews dominate search results while traditional links to news outlets are less visible.
