Cancel Netflix': Elon Musk leads rightwing backlash over trans character in canceled series
"Elon Musk, the multi-billionaire and self-proclaimed free speech absolutist, has in recent days trained his attention on getting people to cancel their Netflix subscriptions in protest of what he claims is the company's woke bias and inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters. Musk, the richest person in the world with a net worth of approximately $500bn, has repeatedly encouraged his 227 million followers on X, the platform he controls, to cancel their Netflix subscriptions."
"Musk's anti-Netflix tirade began on Tuesday, when he posted this is not ok while quoting a post from rightwing activist account Libs of TikTok's clip of the Netflix show Dead End: Paranormal Park, in which the character Barney says he is transgender. Dead End Paranormal Park, a show on Netflix, is pushing pro-transgender on CHILDREN. This show is advertised for 7-YEAR-OLDS, said the Libs of TikTok post, referring to Netflix's TV-Y7 rating designating the show appropriate for viewers aged seven and older."
Elon Musk repeatedly encouraged his 227 million X followers to cancel Netflix, posting or reposting calls at least 26 times over three days. His campaign began by quoting a Libs of TikTok clip of Dead End: Paranormal Park, highlighting a transgender character and noting the show's TV-Y7 rating. The show ran 20 episodes in 2022 and was canceled the following year; Netflix is not currently promoting it. Zach Barack, the voice actor for Barney, rebutted claims by saying parents and children told him the show saved lives. Musk reposted tweets of cancellations and memes portraying a perceived transgender agenda.
