"Disney's beef with YouTube TV has lasted two weeks, making it the longest carriage dispute in the Mouse House's history. The consensus among most experts was the fight wouldn't last long. But with each passing day - and major sporting event - the blackout has dragged on. Still, with Disney losing roughly $30 million a week, a resolution is right around the corner."
"Negotiations with YouTube "could go for a little while," Disney CFO Hugh Johnston said on Disney's earnings call Thursday. The company also added a note in the risk factors of its annual filing, stating it "cannot predict how long this service blackout will last." (I'll pause here to say, Disney obviously benefits from its executives holding the line during such a contentious negotiation, so keep that in mind."
"Disney didn't just talk about its YouTube TV tussle, though. CEO Bob Iger also discussed how AI can enhance Disney+ user experiences, writes BI's Lucia Moses. Still, the AI mention wasn't enough to save that stock, as a miss on revenue expectations sent the stock down almost 8% on Thursday. Cable subscribers shouldn't gloat, though. The Disney blackout is only relevant to the roughly 10 million YouTube TV subscribers, but that might not be the case for long."
A carriage dispute between Disney and YouTube TV has entered its second week, marking the longest such blackout in Disney history and impacting ESPN availability. Disney estimates losses of roughly $30 million per week as negotiations continue without a clear timeline. Company filings warn the blackout duration is unpredictable, and executives say talks "could go for a little while." CEO Bob Iger highlighted AI use for Disney+ experiences, but a revenue miss sent the stock down nearly 8%. The blackout affects about 10 million YouTube TV subscribers, and upcoming distribution contract renewals could produce additional blackouts.
