Meta-owned WhatsApp starts in-app ads for first time - UPI.com
Briefly

WhatsApp is set to introduce ads in its 'updates' tab as parent company Meta begins monetizing its platform through the new channels feature. This move comes as Meta seeks to enhance its revenue, which largely comes from ad sales. Users will see business ads and can interact through messenger. However, WhatsApp assures that personal messages will remain encrypted, and that only limited personal information will be used for targeting ads. The ads will operate alongside WhatsApp's existing features, ensuring the platform's primary functions remain intact while trying to explore new revenue streams.
According to Meta and WhatsApp's VP, "Your personal messages, calls and statuses, they will remain end-to-end encrypted." WhatsApp emphasizes user privacy as it introduces ads.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the ability for users to contact businesses "should be the next pillar" of WhatsApp's business model, highlighting the app's evolution.
With over 3 billion users, Meta believes ads on WhatsApp may cost less compared to Facebook or Instagram, while leveraging very basic user information for targeting.
Ads will be featured in WhatsApp's 'updates' tab and users will simply interact with advertisers through the existing messenger platform.
