The Center for Climate Integrity's report, "The Fraud of Advanced Recycling," critiques claims made by petrochemical companies regarding advanced recycling's ability to address plastic waste. It exposes significant technical and financial limitations inherent in these technologies, citing evidence of misleading assertions by industry leaders. Notably, industry insiders have admitted the legitimacy of criticisms surrounding advanced recycling, labeling many claims as 'greenwashing.' The report raises skepticism about the industry's promises to create a sustainable circular economy for plastics, emphasizing the necessity for more honest communication about recycling capabilities.
"The concerns of industry critics are, in many cases, justified," said Silke Einschuetz of AMI Consulting, acknowledging the limitations of advanced recycling technologies."
"I think a lot of it is greenwashing... If you put the name 'recycling' on anything, people assume that it's green and it's good for the environment," stated Brittany Martin from Wood Mackenzie.
