A significant malware campaign known as Vapor has infected over 300 Android apps, impacting more than 56 million installations. The malware masquerades as utility applications and activates adware upon launching, displaying intrusive ads that compromise the device's usability and redirect users to phishing websites for their login and credit card info. Researchers from IAS and Bitdefender uncovered how these apps exploit user trust to steal personal information, deliberately minimizing detection risks by using multiple developer accounts to distribute the malicious software.
The Vapor malware campaign demonstrates the alarming capability of malicious apps to disguise as helpful tools, ultimately leading to severe data breaches for unsuspecting users.
