The Pirates are acquiring righty Chase Shugart from the Red Sox for minor league right-hander Matt McShane. Shugart showed potential with a 96.1 mph fastball in his brief major league stint.
Chase Shugart, at 28, made his big league debut last season, pitching 8 2/3 innings for the Red Sox. His success in Triple-A this year (4.46 ERA, 25.6% strikeout rate) led to his acquisition by the Pirates.
Matt McShane, a 22-year-old reliever with a 3.76 ERA at St. Joseph's University, is viewed as a project for the Boston Red Sox, potentially starting in Class-A.
Shugart, who has options remaining, will offer the Pirates flexible bullpen depth, having shown versatility with five pitches, though he struggled to induce swings and misses in the majors.
