The Padres have selected left-hander Cruz and right-handers to their 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 Draft protection deadline, currently at 37 players.
Cruz, once part of the Joe Musgrove trade, had an impressive season split between Double- and Triple-A, boasting a 3.59 ERA at AA and a 35.4% strikeout rate.
Cruz's promotion to Triple-A added to his experience, where although his ERA was higher at 4.42, he maintained a 28.7% strikeout rate.
Afters the Padres organization chose Cruz in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft, they are now taking steps to protect him from this year's draft.
