The Baltimore Orioles have optioned top infield prospect Gunnar Mayo to Triple-A Norfolk for the season opener, alongside reassigned non-roster players. Despite solid statistics at Triple-A (.279/.376/.543 in 151 games), Mayo expressed disappointment, feeling he showcased his abilities. Manager Brandon Hyde emphasized that the decision is testament to the team's infield depth, suggesting more reps at Triple-A will benefit Mayo. Last season, he struggled in the majors with a .098 average over 17 games and similarly underwhelmed in spring training. Although Mayo possesses significant power, the Orioles prefer to avoid benching him in the majors.
It obviously sucks because you feel like you've proven everything you've needed to (in the minors), but sometimes it doesn't feel like it's quite enough.
Good teams option players that they like. More reps at Triple-A, we feel like that's what he needs right now.
