The Orioles have claimed infielder Jose Rojas off waivers from the Angels, filling a vacancy on their 40-man roster.
The O's had a vacancy on their 40-man roster but it is now full after this move.
Rojas is known for his strong defense and contact hitting ability, but lacks power. In his limited time in the majors, he had a great debut but struggled in his subsequent appearances. In the minors, he has decent numbers but lacks significant power.
Soto, 24 in June, is generally considered a strong defender and solid contact hitter, but with little power to speak of.
The Orioles are looking for a left-handed hitting infielder to pair with Jordan Westburg at second base, and Rojas will likely factor into the competition for that role. He has a few option years remaining, so he could be kept in the minors until needed in the big leagues.
Soto also hits from the left side and will likely factor into the competition for that part-time role.
