Matt Barnes Throws For Scouts
Briefly

Former Red Sox closer Matt Barnes, who underwent hip surgery last season, threw for big league scouts and is expected to sign with a team before spring training. Barnes had a sharp decline in performance in recent years, partly due to a lingering hip issue.
Barnes is still building arm strength but was in the low 90s with his fastball.
Despite a strong start in 2021, Barnes struggled in the second half of the season. Over his final 15 appearances, his ERA was 10.13. However, his track record from 2017-2021 shows solid numbers with a 3.82 ERA and a 34.8% strikeout rate.
Even with that calamitous finish to the season, his overall numbers from 2017-21 were sound: 3.82 ERA, 38 saves, 76 holds, 34.8% strikeout rate, 11.1% walk rate.
