The Chicago Cubs have signed infielder Jon Berti to a one-year, $2 million deal with performance bonuses. This move aligns with the Cubs' intention to strengthen their bench, particularly after trading Isaac Paredes. At 35 years old, Berti brings extensive experience across multiple infield positions and has previously played over 100 games for the Marlins in recent seasons. While he has been noted for his decent defensive skills and speed on the bases, his past season was marred by injuries, limiting his overall impact. The signing aims to bolster the Cubs' infield depth ahead of the new season.
Berti, who turns 35 today, is a sensible depth pickup. He's a good athlete who has ample experience at each of second base, third base and shortstop.
Chicago has already added Carson Kelly as a backup catcher and has a strong outfield. Their infield was much less settled after they included Isaac Paredes in the Kyle Tucker trade.
Berti topped 100 games for the Marlins in both the 2022 and '23 seasons. He combined for a .268/.334/.373 batting line with solid strikeout and walk rates.
The Yankees opted not to tender him a contract, which MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected would've landed around $3.8MM.
