Fear of ICE can be deadly: The murdered migrants too scared to report abuse
Valdes lived in Las Vegas and her best friend Calzadilla lived in Barcelona, and they spoke almost daily about family in Cuba. On May 26, Calzadilla asked whether Valdes’s husband Roelmer Sanchez Garrido was home so they could talk freely; he was not. Valdes said she needed money to leave and wanted to return to Cuba during the week she died, fearing both Garrido and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Police records state Valdes argued with Garrido on April 28 about returning to Cuba. A neighbor reported Valdes asked to have her and her younger daughter’s passports kept safe before the murder. Garrido, 46, flew into a rage, beat Valdes, grabbed her by the neck, strangled her, tried to revive her, and covered her with a blanket so their little girl would not see. At 3:17 a.m. Nevada time, Valdes, 38, was pronounced dead by paramedics.
