The House of Alba Foundation, celebrating its 50th anniversary, invited artist Joana Vasconcelos to showcase her contemporary works in the historic Liria Palace, which has a rich art collection dating back to the 16th century. The palace, home to the Duke of Alba, offers a unique blend of historical significance and contemporary art, creating a dialogue between different eras. Vasconcelos, renowned for her large-scale installations, sees this opportunity as brave, emphasizing the vitality of art within a living residence. Her past experiences, including influential exhibitions in Spain, highlight her connections to the art world.
Because the family lives here, the collection looks more real, more alive than in any other museum. It is brave to have opened it to contemporary art.
I then started working with Spanish curators, including María del Corral and Rosa Martinez, who took me to the Venice Biennale in 2005, which catapulted my career.
