The lightweight construction of the building, combined with the absence of sprinklers, made it extremely difficult for firefighters to combat the rapidly advancing flames after the fire reached the attic.
Rockland County Fire Coordinator Chris Kear expressed that preventing the fire from spreading to the attic or windows is crucial for effective extinguishing, stating that once it's reached that level, it becomes nearly impossible to control.
Fannetta Glass-Miles described the onset of the fire as sudden, recalling a loud boom followed by flames rising quickly and smoke permeating their home, indicating the terrifying speed of the fire.
Town Supervisor George Hoehmann noted that during reconstruction of the building, new safety measures will include the installation of sprinklers to enhance fire response and occupant safety in the future.
