Thousands of University of California healthcare and technical employees voted to authorize a strike, pointing to staffing shortages undermining patient care and research efforts. The strike, scheduled for February 26, follows unsuccessful contract negotiations with the UPTE union, which represents nearly 20,000 workers. Union leaders accuse UC of unfair labor practices, including raising healthcare costs and resisting discussions on vacancies and promotions. The impending strike could disrupt hospital operations and research critical to health and safety issues, emphasizing workers' frustrations with what they describe as bad faith negotiations.
Among union members are lab technicians at a UC Davis lab critical to California's efforts to track and prevent bird flu as it spreads through cattle herds.
We hope this will produce a change in UC's behavior.”
The union said it's planning a three-day strike beginning Feb. 26.
The union, known as UPTE, said it called for the strike vote because the university has failed to bargain in good faith in negotiations.
