Metro's fleet of over 2,000 buses has been fully retrofitted with protective barriers, following increased violence against transit operators, making it the first agency nationwide to do so.
The barriers are designed to protect drivers from physical assaults such as punches and thrown objects, utilizing 55,000 square feet of steel and laminated, shatter-resistant glass.
From April to September, operators on buses with full barriers experienced a 58 percent decrease in assaults, coupled with a decline in spitting incidents.
Despite the overall crime decrease across Metro’s system this year, recent reports indicate that assault incidents on buses have not followed the same trend.
