Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34, pleaded not guilty to starting the Line fire which has scorched at least 39,000 acres and forced evacuations of thousands.
Prosecutors allege Halstenberg attempted to start fires in at least two other locations before igniting the Line fire, which has threatened over 65,000 homes.
Halstenberg's mother claimed he has done disapproved things but emphasized that she does not see him as an arsonist, suggesting a complexity in his character.
Authorities indicate additional charges may be filed for further damages arising from the Line fire, which has injured firefighters and continues to endanger homes.
