L.A. County officials are facing criticism for requesting a temporary waiver of state housing laws as they seek to expedite recovery from recent wildfires. Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Lindsey Horvath proposed a plan that could undermine efforts to boost affordable housing, prompting pushback from advocates who believe it would exacerbate the housing crisis. They argue that the proposed waiver could significantly reduce restrictions meant to facilitate the creation of affordable units, whereas county officials assert that halting certain regulations is necessary for the community's recovery and rebuilding process.
In order to provide the community the ability to return and not face immediate displacement, we understand the need to pause some of these policies.
This is just totally going in the wrong direction, noting that the laws have spurred the construction of thousands of affordable units across the state.
