A home in Pacoima exploded on Thursday, critically injuring a 24-year-old man and displacing around 26 families due to potential illegal fireworks activity. The LAPD bomb squad found explosive materials, including black powder, linked to homemade fireworks. The resident suffered severe burns and was hospitalized. Firefighters rescued four dogs, three of which were safely retrieved, while the last dog was saved from being trapped. The investigation continues, and the area remains unsafe for residents due to structural concerns.
The LAPD bomb squad has identified explosive material inside of the partially collapsed structure, some of which is black powder, which is known to be used in construction of illegal homemade fireworks.
The 24-year-old male resident, who suffered severe burns and open wounds, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Dozens of families were asked to leave their homes after an evacuation order was placed Thursday night, with about 26 families being displaced from their homes.
