'Heat dome' coming to California brings new challenge for firefighters
Briefly

Friday will kick off a warm-up as a heat dome expands westward, affecting much of California with elevated temperatures. The San Joaquin Valley and Southern California deserts will experience the most significant impact.
Interior California faces moderate to major heat risks, with the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills expecting excessively hot conditions up to 110 degrees. The Southland will experience peak temperatures on Saturday.
The heat dome phenomenon isn't a precise term, but describes the process pushing temperatures up as air sinks below the upper ridge. Interior regions away from the coast will be the hottest.
California is on alert through at least Tuesday for high temperatures, with some areas under an excessive heat watch. In SoCal, Saturday is forecasted to be the warmest day, with temperatures peaking in the 90s to mid-100s.
