Former sheriff's deputy arrested in kidnapping, sexually assault of girl, 14
Briefly

A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, Benny Caluya, and his nephew, Clifford Abihai, were arrested for the kidnapping of a 14-year-old girl. Caluya, 68, faces additional accusations of sexual assault. The pair was apprehended on August 28 and released on bond the same day, with their next court appearance scheduled for September 30.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirms that detectives from the Special Victims Bureau will review the case before bringing it to prosecutors for potential charges against the suspects.
Benny Caluya served in law enforcement since 1979, first as a reserve deputy, then partially working in San Bernardino before returning to L.A. County, where he resigned in 2001. His peace officer certification is currently inactive.
Upon inquiry, Caluya declined to comment, stating that he would only refer questions to his attorney, Mark Gallagher, while Abihai mentioned he had also secured legal representation but was unable to recall the name of his lawyer.
