The government has revealed that 518 employers in the UK owe workers collectively more than £7.4 million due to underpayment, as identified by HMRC in investigations spanning from 2015 to 2022. Businesses that failed to pay their employees correctly faced penalties up to 200% of the owed amount. In Croydon, seven firms were named, with Saggiomo Luxury Foods Limited cited for failing to pay a worker £1,787.60 for two months. The government is committed to enforcing workers' rights and raising the National Living Wage and Minimum Wage as part of their economic support efforts.
Minister for Employment Rights, Justin Madders, emphasized, 'There is no excuse for employers to undercut their workers... ensuring workers have the support they need and... receive a fair day's pay for a fair day's work is a key commitment in our Plan for Change.'
Baroness Philippa Stroud remarked, 'Underpayment leaves workers out of pocket and disadvantages the majority of employers who do abide by the rules,' highlighting the importance of these naming rounds.
