Harrods, the renowned luxury retailer, recently became the third UK retailer targeted by cyber attacks within two weeks. The company reported unauthorized access attempts on May 1 and has taken preventive measures by limiting internet access at its locations. Unlike Marks and Spencer, which faced a severe ransomware attack, Harrods continues to operate online sales. Cybersecurity experts suggest the attacks could stem from a common vulnerability among the retailers or reacting to M&S's security breaches. The hacking group Scattered Spider has been linked to multiple high-profile cyber incidents, raising industry alarms.
"We recently experienced attempts to gain unauthorised access to some of our systems," said Harrods, emphasizing its proactive measures in response to the cyber threat.
Toby Lewis from Darktrace suggested that the incidents could be due to a common supplier breach or as a reaction to the severity of the M&S attack.
Harrods stated, "Our seasoned IT security team immediately took proactive steps to keep systems safe and as a result we have restricted internet access at our sites today."
The original attack on M&S was attributed to the hacking group Scattered Spider, which has been involved in several notable cyber incidents.
