A coalition of well-known authors, including Richard Osman and Kazuo Ishiguro, has petitioned the UK government to hold Meta accountable for allegedly using copyrighted books to train artificial intelligence. The authors are pushing for accountability following revelations that Meta utilized the shadow library LibGen without proper permissions. They argue that this infringes copyright laws in the UK, with authors feeling powerless against corporate giants. The letter emphasizes that Meta's actions represent a significant theft from writers, as they have not been compensated for their work being used in AI training.
As McDermid stated, 'I'm a crime writer I understand theft when I see it. And by using pirated material, Meta are stealing from us twice over.'
Mosse argued, 'For writers, and all those who make a living by their hard work, originality and imagination, this is another David and Goliath moment.'
