In a recent parliamentary hearing, the CEO of United Utilities, Louise Beardmore, acknowledged that the company leads in pollution and internal sewer flooding. Despite her substantial salary, including a 420k bonus, Beardmore stated that two-thirds of her pay is tied to environmental and customer outcomes. The latest data revealed that United Utilities was the worst polluter in 2023, discharging over 3.6 million hours of sewage into rivers. The company plans a 32% bill increase to fund a £13.7 billion investment plan aimed at addressing these issues by 2030.
Beardmore stated, 'Our performance isn't good enough; we have one of the highest rates of internal sewer flooding across the country.'
Garfield expressed her commitment to improvement, saying, 'I am committed to get to zero dry-day spills from our system, as climate change poses increasing challenges.'
