A study by TfL and GLA revealed that expanding London's ULEZ zone significantly decreased air pollution and the health risks associated with poor air quality. The findings supported the rationale that fewer polluting vehicles lead to cleaner air. Interestingly, local businesses experienced no noticeable decline in activity following the expansion. Yet, criticism arose regarding the study's narrow focus, as it didn’t assess if the implementation was optimal or explore alternative approaches that might have yielded equal or better health outcomes with less disruption.
Reducing the number of polluting road vehicles has reduced the amount of pollution in the air, concludes a TfL and GLA study into the impact of expanding the ULEZ zone to the outer London boroughs.
However, as an impact report, it didn't examine the issues any other academic report would have when studying the impact of a major health intervention - whether the impact was worth the intervention and what could be done to improve the outcomes.
