Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other dignitaries gathered in Lisbon to honor Aga Khan IV, who passed away at 88. Known for his philanthropy and leadership, Aga Khan IV significantly influenced development projects benefiting impoverished communities across Asia and Africa. After the funeral, he will be laid to rest in Egypt, and leadership will pass to his son, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V. With 2.5 to 15 million followers globally, he was a pivotal figure for the Ismaili community and valued worldwide for his commitment to peace and development.
He spearheaded international development projects that benefited both Ismailis and many others in some of the poorest regions of Asia and Africa under the auspices of his Aga Khan Development Network.
Trudeau noted that he had been a "dear" family friend and praised him as "a friend to all Canadians, and to everyone who dreams of a more peaceful world."
