The Indo Daily: Gouging, biting and an 'embarrassment' on pub dynasty - the Chawke sibling assault case
"Led by pub mogul and family patriarch Charlie, the family have amassed a catalogue of some of Ireland's biggest public houses. The family business currently includes top pubs such as Searsons of Baggot Street, The Bank on College Green, The Old Orchard in Rathfarnham and, of course, the Goat Inn. It employs hundreds of people."
"John McHugh and Gerard Cox, both aged in their 50s, were at the residents' bar at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare, Co Limerick, on November 9, 2023, when they were set upon by the brother and sister, Limerick Circuit Criminal Court heard. Mother-of-three Alison Chawke (41) bit Mr McHugh on his cheek and kicked him in the head as her brother Bill (31) wrestled with Mr McHugh on the floor of the hotel, the court was told."
"With Alison and Bill now facing sentencing over the attack on two innocent men, we ask what this means for brand Chawke and the lucrative family dynasty."
The Chawke family is a major force in Ireland’s pub industry, led by Charlie Chawke, who built a portfolio including Searsons of Baggot Street, The Bank on College Green, The Old Orchard in Rathfarnham, and the Goat Inn. The business employs hundreds of people. In November 2023, a late-night incident at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare involved two of Charlie Chawke’s children, Alison Chawke and Bill Chawke. Court heard that Alison bit John McHugh on the cheek and kicked him in the head, while Bill wrestled with McHugh on the floor. Both Alison and Bill face sentencing over the attack on two men.
