London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan reiterated his longstanding opposition to the expansion of Heathrow Airport, advocating for a second runway at Gatwick as a more environmentally friendly option. He emphasized that any consideration of a new runway would only proceed if it met climate change standards. During a budget session, he highlighted the significance of addressing the climate crisis, noise, and air pollution concerns, while stating he had not allocated funds for a legal challenge against Heathrow's expansion, which remains speculative at this time.
The climate change committee, well respected, set out quite clearly its recommendations, which is the only time expansion in aviation should be considered is if it abides with our climate change commitments.
I will consider the merits of that case. But I am quite clear that my views on the expansion of Heathrow and a new runway haven't changed.
