Helena Long, a mother of three in south London, discusses the removal of 'No Ball Games' signs and installation of basketball hoops on the Mursell Estate. This initiative by London Sport aims to encourage children to play outside, combating the trend of indoor gaming. Long reflects on the cultural shift towards restricting outdoor play, citing her hopes that this change will inspire a resurgence of children's outdoor activities. Beatrice Kabutakapua from Woolwich adds her perspective, criticizing restrictive signs and proposing a balance that allows play while being considerate of neighbors.
"The kids won't have so much fear being out playing," she said. "A lot of people use the signs, not only for ball games, but in general as 'you shouldn't be playing around here'."
"It's okay, don't get me wrong, but too much of it gets to the brain," she said, referring to children staying in to play computer games.
"It's a pity, because there is a lot of space and it's not being utilised for anything except passing by," she said about the play area limitations.
She said it was amazing to see a large group of children playing outside on the estate after a basketball hoop sign was installed.
