Labour MP Barry Gardiner has opposed the expansion of Heathrow Airport, arguing that increased runway capacity contradicts the government's net zero emissions targets. While Chancellor Rachel Reeves implied support for a third runway, she refrained from addressing speculation about the plans. Gardiner stressed that true economic growth should prioritize decarbonization, acknowledging that simply pursuing technological advancements isn’t sufficient to meet climate targets without restricting the aviation sector. Labour MP Dan Tomlinson suggested that growing airport capacity while achieving clean energy is possible, citing upcoming technological developments in sustainable aviation fuel and electric planes.
I think Rachel is wrong to pit decarbonising the economy against economic growth. Decarbonisation is the growth of the future.
Sustainable aviation and economic growth go hand in hand but I would not comment on speculation.
We were also clear that we would make every effort to get to clean power by 2030.
Climate experts have concluded there was no way to reach net zero without limiting the aviation sector.
