The High Hill Taproom in Walthamstow will close at the end of March due to an 'untenable' situation with its landlord, the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Hackney Brewery, the owner, revealed that despite consistent rent payments and attempts to settle post-COVID debts through a voluntary agreement, the Council refused to grant a new license necessary for the taproom's operation. After nine months of failed negotiations, the closure is set, although the brewing operations will continue as the taproom operates until its final day.
Hackney Brewery stated, 'The ongoing situation with our landlord, London Borough of Waltham Forest, has become untenable,' as they struggle with license approval despite paying rent consistently.
Despite three years of continuous rent payments and a voluntary settlement agreement for post-COVID debts, the Council withheld the necessary permission for the taproom's license, leading to the closure.
'In June 2024, we entered into a voluntary agreement to settle post-COVID debt with our creditors over an extended period. However, this was not acceptable to the Council in respect to arrears due to them.'
The High Hill Taproom will remain open on Thursday and Friday evenings, and all weekend until its closure on March 30, marking the end of an era for the Walthamstow taproom.
